Around 50 automobiles have been marked with what appears to be human blood in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Vehicles, walls and mailboxes were defaced, in some cases with swastikas, they reported in a statement.
Police state they were alerted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a resident observed that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued liquid.
The substance had been applied in the form of a swastika, they stated.
Law enforcement then found many other marked automobiles and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under laws prohibiting the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.
Police state initial examinations indicate the liquid was most likely human blood.
"Currently there is no indication as to its source; officials are not yet cognizant of any physical harm in connection with the event," they commented.
Municipal representatives stated they were attempting "to unravel the incident" and have asked to the community for information.
A senior official commented the attack left him without words and had to be resolved promptly.
"This incident affects the center of Hanau and revives the wounds of the extremist terrorist attack in 2020," he wrote on online, mentioning the killing of nine victims by a gunman aiming at individuals of migrant background in February 2020.
